4 ice cream spots you must visit this summer

When the first settlers looked out on the broad plains that make up our state, many saw prime grazing country. There was ample room for cattle to graze, grow and provide the milk for the gallons of ice cream they would make.

Well, that might not be an entirely accurate history. Nonetheless, Iowans have been perfecting their ice cream flavors for more than a century, making our state home to some truly fantastic ice cream.

We like to think Cedar Rapids is particularly exceptional in the ice cream arena. If you want to branch out and try the varieties of Cedar Rapids ice cream, here are four must-visit ice cream parlors in our fair city.

Great American Popcorn

1121 3rd Street SE
Cedar Rapids, IA 52401
(319) 366-3554

Don’t be fooled by the name! In addition to great popcorn (100 flavors of it), this iconic store located in the ever trendy and fun New Bohemia neighborhood serves up some amazing ice cream. With hundreds of loyal followers in the city and throughout the state, this is a great place to bring out-of-town visitors, the family or just yourself.

Deb’s Ice Cream & Deli

215 3rd Street SE
Cedar Rapids, IA 52401
(319) 365-1010

For almost 50 years, this family business has been a staple in downtown Cedar Rapids, cooking up an amazing menu of daily soups, sandwiches and, let’s not forget, ice cream. With malts, shakes and ginormous cones (in home-baked cones), this little spot earned 13 minutes of national fame when then President Barack Obama paid a visit in 2012.

Parlor City Ice Cream

Cedar Rapids, IA 52402
(319) 393-4867

Since 1962, people have flocked to this local favorite to indulge their sweet tooth and taste some of the best ice cream in the state. With an array of flavors, novelty treats and a massive banana split that is a meal in itself, you’ll probably end up visiting one of their two locations six to seven dozen times this summer!

1020 Old Marion Road NE
Cedar Rapids, IA 52402
(319) 393-5576

This cute and unassuming ice cream shop has been a well-known secret for decades. Flavors like Yellow Cake Batter, Root Beer and Blackberry are must-haves. Next time you’re out on Old Marion Road and the AC in your car just isn’t cutting it, stop by!
