5 dream locations for a second home

A big part of the real estate business is helping people realize their dreams.

Of course, sometimes those dreams can be a little too extravagant and, short of picking the right lotto ticket, are not too likely to come true.

Still, it’s nice to think, "What if money were no issue? Where would be the best place to have that second home?" Let’s take that flight of fantasy and look at five amazing places in the United States where most everyone would like to build a getaway.

  1. Aspen, Colorado. There are bigger ski resorts, with longer runs and more terrain, but when it comes to the full, luxurious experience that is life at high altitudes, few places compare to Aspen. In the heart of the Rocky Mountains, Aspen brings together natural beauty with world-class comfort like you wouldn't believe. 2. Maui, Hawaii. It’s hard to imagine any place more beautiful than Maui. Soaring volcanoes, postcard-perfect beaches, snorkeling, whale watching and perfect weather have made Maui a dream destination for millions.
  3. Manhattan. Not everyone wants wide open spaces and fresh air. Some want crowded cities and a smell you can’t quite identify. Of course, there’s a lot more to Manhattan than that. The culture, the energy, the enormous sense of possibility, and of course, the cost. You can pay $20,000 a month for a family-sized apartment, which is a lot to pay for a place without a yard.
  4. Napa, California. For the foodie or wine lover out there, few places are as magical as California’s Napa Valley. With over 400 vineyards, this is home to some of the finest wine in the world. (Sorry, France, but it’s true.) And where there’s good wine, there’s good food. Be sure to punch a few extra holes in your belt!
  5. Martha's Vineyard. A few hundred years ago, these islands off the coast of Massachusetts were at the center of the whaling industry. Now the three islands that make up Martha’s Vineyard are at the center of affluence. Every now and then a president of the United States makes an appearance!

Vacationing in these places might be a luxurious way to have some run-ins with the rich and famous, but you’ll probably get an itching for home after a while.
