6 tips for moving with pets

Moving with kids can be a challenge, but moving with pets is a whole other ballgame. You can’t coax them into cooperating with promises of toys or ice cream, nor can you threaten to take away their television privileges or fidget spinner.

There is no doubt that in many situations, pet transportation can be difficult. But, if you’re prepared, moving with your pet can be a relatively smooth process. Here are six tips to ensure the experience of moving into your new home goes as smoothly as possible for you and your animal.

  1. If you’re moving out of state or even out of the city, be sure to gather all the medical documents from your veterinarian and ask if they can recommend a vet in the area where you’re moving.
  2. For moving day, assemble a “moving kit” for your animal. This should include plenty of food, a lot of treats, a supply of water, kitty litter, grooming tools, toys and everything else they’ll need to stay occupied and happy during the transition.
  3. If your animal doesn’t have a microchip, invest in one. These provide a huge level of insurance at a time when animals are more likely to wander out a door or become lost in a strange, exciting new neighborhood.
  4. During the move, while you’re taking apart rooms, moving large pieces of furniture and causing all sorts of racket, keep your animal in a quiet place. This could be an empty room, in the yard or at a friend’s house. Check on them often and do what you can to pamper them and make the process as stress-free as possible.
  5. Finish moving before you introduce your animal to your new house. Set up as much as you can. The familiar objects will help your animal adjust to their new surroundings.
  7. Take extra caution during the first month in your new house. The stress of moving might make your animal more likely to bolt out the door. In this case, they may become lost in an unfamiliar area.
