Awesome autumn: Cedar Rapids boasts multiple family attractions

If you’re like many Americans, autumn is your favorite time of the year.  Many of us savor the chance to get out in the fresh, spicy air and enjoy the still-mild temperatures, the harvest of farm-fresh apples and pumpkins, and the fun family hayrides in celebration of the season.

Residents in and around Cedar Rapids are no exception, and fortunately they have access to several great attractions that celebrate all things autumn. Among them are the delightful Bloomsbury Farm and two full-service (and fully delicious) apple orchards — Wilson’s and Allen’s — which all invite retail trade and host field trips, weddings and other special events. Some of their best features include:

  • Just 10 minutes west of Cedar Rapids, the 160-year-old Bloomsbury Farm offers a number of fun activities for people of all ages. Its newest attraction: a 1,200-foot round-trip zip line carrying passengers 50 feet off the ground above a creek, pastures and cornfields. Even better, you can fly tandem to enjoy the experience with a friend or family member. Adventurers might also brave Bloomsbury’s Scream Park featuring 75 live creepers and four haunted attractions, or challenge friends to a game of paintball. Other guests may choose to get lost in the 10-acre corn maze (or the four-acre maze for kids); catch a hayride to the 17-acre pumpkin patch to pick a favorite; or enjoy kids’ smiles as they enjoy the pig races, train ride, Jumping Pillow, pedal cars, petting zoo, gemstone mining and more. Themed weekends offer even more attractions, and concessions and shopping are available.
  • Wilson’s Orchard offers a traditional apple orchard experience; think honeycrisp, golden delicious, autumn gold and 117 other varieties along with Wilson’s famous fresh-baked turnovers, warm cinnamon donuts, fresh apple cider (bottled on site), dried apple chips and apple slushies. You can also buy Wilson’s hard cider at area restaurants and retailers. Guests can pick their own apples or take a fun, narrated tractor ride that even crosses a creek, and some weekends are themed. As advocates of the “grow local” movement, owners Paul and Sara Rasch are proud their farming and marketing operations involve low inputs, low food miles and low carbon emissions.
  • Allen’s Orchard in Marion has been a family-owned, you-pick apple farm for more than 40 years. In addition to offering 35 apple varieties (intriguing names include September wonder and snow sweet), the farm sells other gift items, treats like donuts, turnovers, cookies, pies and caramel apples and produce that includes concord grapes, Bartlett pears and blackberries.
