When you start to think about retiring, one thing many people overlook is asking whether their home is ready for retirement. Are you going to be able to continue living in the house as you age? If you know you want to stay in this particular home you might want to think about some of these items.
Is there a bedroom on the main floor? Is there a room you could make into a bedroom? If not, then you might want to consider a chair lift. The cost is around $3,000 to $4,000. I live in a 2 story home with no bedroom on the main level. My husband and I have made the decision to stay in this home as long as possible. We have also decided that we would install a chair lift when necessary.
Do you have a walk-in shower? If not, then you might want to consider taking out the tub and installing a walk-in shower with grab bars. The bathtub is responsible for the majority of injuries of people as they age. We recently remodeled our bathroom taking out the jet tub and replaced it with a beautiful walk-in shower.
Sometimes, when you start thinking about the cost of making the changes that will allow you to stay in the home as long as possible, you come to realize that moving may make the most sense. The only person that can answer that question is you. Starting to think about it before it becomes necessary will make it easier to make a non-emotional decision. Having your home ready for retirement will improve your enjoyment when you do retire. After all, retiring is suppose to be fun!
