The Czech Village, located near Downtown Cedar Rapids and centered on the Cedar River, is one of the few places in the entire world that retains old Czech culture.
This neighborhood established during the independence fight for the Czech Republic in the early 20th century when Czech culture and traditions were celebrated at an all-time high in the motherland. The location of the neighborhood was selected for its proximity to the old Sinclair meat packing plant which employed most of Cedar Rapids’ immigrants.
Featuring a newly built Czech Library and the Czech National cemetery, as well as a traditional market and many traditional small businesses, the Czech Village has a downtown of its own. Events including a Kolach festival, and independence celebration and a parade for St. Joseph’s day let neighborhood attract many tourists and offer a unique cultural experience.
Greatly impacted by the floods of 2008, the Czech village has been a strong center for the Rebuild Cedar Rapids movement. Many of the local businesses have been remodeled, and many new businesses have has opportunity to repurpose historical buildings such as the new restaurant Capone’s, located at what was the Czech national bank.
Czech Village is a hub for night life with excellent food in bars such as Parlor City, which offers the best Philly cheesesteak sandwiches in town and has live music on a weekly basis. The Chrome Horse also offers live events and is well known for its rough and tumble reputation.
Housing in the Czech Village is mostly small single family homes. Due to the floods of 2008, many of these nice small homes have been renovated.
